A day after learning of the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, diplomats and governments on Friday pushed to take advantage of the unexpected killing as a chance to restart moribund talks for a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

President Biden says he told Israel's leader to make the killing of Hamas' leader "an opportunity" for peace in Gaza.

Sinwar, 62, served as Hamas’ leader in Gaza since 2017 and was named the group’s overall leader in August after Ismail Haniyeh, the group’s political chief, was killed in Iran—an attack Hamas blamed on Israel, which has not publicly acknowledged any involvement.
