When the clock hit zero on No. 19 Iowa State’s grinder of a 20-0 win over Houston, Campbell surpassed Dan McCarney to sit alone as the winningest coach in program history. The victory was never really in jeopardy, but there were a few moments of doubt about what the Cyclones (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) were exactly doing against the Cougars (1-4, 0-2).

Iowa State’s national football brand exploded during Campbell’s tenure. The Cyclones reached a bowl game in six of the past seven seasons, including the 2020 Fiesta Bowl where they beat Oregon 34-17.

With the next win, Campbell will pass the great Dan McCarney on the wins list. McCarney was the head coach for Iowa State from 1995-2006 and won 56 games during his tenure in Ames.
